Dr. Donald Demaray

Dr. Don Demaray has been a light in the lives of several people on our Soul Care Collective Steering Committee. Indeed, he has been a bulwark of our entire community, though to hear him speak of himself, you would never know. He has spent countless hours pouring into the lives of people from all over the world. Being invited to tea at his home was a special honor that was bestowed on most anyone, quite liberally.

When you came to have tea with Dr. Don, most often, he would first take you to his extensive library. While you perused the titles, he would prayerfully scour the shelves until he found just the right one. Then, he would take it down, inscribe it, and give it to you. There was just something about that gift that you knew was precious. He wasn’t just giving you a book off his shelf. He was passing down a piece of his life to you—something that had formed his faith and had become a thread in the tapestry of his life.

This is the way he has poured into people’s lives. He generously shared pieces of himself and made space for people to meet with Jesus and be forever changed.

  1. Ed Bean says:

Dr. Demary was a delightful & caring person who freely shared with his students. It was my joy to have him as one of my professors.

  2. Dan Casselberry says:

Dr Demaray challenged my preaching, encouraged my research into contemporary issues in our study group,
was a godly man that supported my outreach to the community. He was a blessing.

    • Wayne Sawyer (74) says:

      A few months ago Dr
      Don and I exchanged emails.
He referred to.my spouse, Becky, and I as “God’s special gospel servants,” a typical Demaray description that was certainly over the top. However, he surely did deserve to wear that tribute and more. His influence is very wide and will live on.

    • Edward C. "Eddie" Patterson says:

I so much enjoyed being part of Dr. Demaray’s Class on preaching. He had the class down to a science and yet was very personable. Two things I remember him telling us. He told about his father who was president of Seattle Pacific University if I remember correctly, taking a nap after lunch each day. He also challenged us to have 2,000 volumes in our personal libraries. I didn’t make it but I have to close to it. Praise the Lord for Dr. Demaray’s life.

  3. Rev. Linda D. Stoddard says:

Don Demaray encouraged me in my preaching and my ministry. He was one of my first professors to indicate his faith in both my call and my ability as a preacher. He was a mentor to every student that ever had the privilege to sit under his instruction or his preaching. To be befriended by Dr. and Mrs. Demaray made my time at Asbury a rich and blessed one indeed!

  4. Wayne Nichols says:

Dr. Demaray was my first preaching professor. He did more than teach us about preaching but how to prepare a pastoral prayer and that the pastor’s spiritual life was more than bible study and sermon preparation. He will enjoy his eternal rewards. God Bless his family.

  5. Brian Carr says:

I had Dr. Demoray for a preaching class and a creative writing course back in the mid 1990s. Both deeply enriched my life, my ministry and particularly my walk with Christ. I can’t say I was ever invited to his home for tea and the library tour but frankly, every time I entered his class I felt like I was being graciously welcomed into his living room, his life. He was my professor but even more than that he was my friend.

  6. William Hensel says:

Dr. Don shone brightly and warmly, a gracious and godly encourager, scholar and great teacher of preaching, a lively and challenging disciple of Jesus. How he will be missed among his survivors, and how he will be welcomed by Jesus and the great cloud of witnesses he has now joined in glory. Thank you, Lord, and thank you, Don!

  7. Ron Suntken says:

I was privileged have Dr. DEMARAY as my Professor in History and Preaching. Our class visited his study. Ah, sweet memories! A wonderful teacher of Biblical Truth. Our condolences to his family. Ron Suntken, 1997 graduate.

  8. I took the basic preaching class in my first semester at Asbury. I was left with a vision of the greatness of the call to preach which has never left me. My life in the forty some years after leaving Asbury has been one of labouring among the urban poor. Giving time for preparation has been tough, but I have tried not to fail here. Preaching is too great a task to take lightly. Of course the preparation has kept me fresh and excited about ministry too! I am so grateful for the impact of Dr Demaray on my life.
