Alumni Spotlight: Stephen D. Elliott

Published Date: July 29, 2016

Steve Elliott (D.Min., 2007) was raised in Canada, a fourth generation Wesleyan. He became a Christian around the age of 5 and was very active in his home church as a teenager. He married his high school sweetheart Helen in 1975, and they now have 3 children, 2 grandchildren, and a wonderful son-in-law. As a young adult Steve served as a elliott-stephen-9646-300x300professional photographer, but in the early 1980’s he sensed a call from God to leave photography and pursue ministerial training. Stephen graduated from Bethany Bible college in 1983, and immediately began to plant a church in the Canadian capital city of Ottawa. The church began with just Steve and his wife and grew slowly from 1983 until 1997. A series of significant happenings took place in 1997, and the church then began to experience dramatic growth. Steve and Helen stayed at the church for 22 years, and saw the church begin to break through the 1,000 barrier in attendance. In 2004 Steve sensed a call to teaching. He attended Asbury Seminary and completed his D. Min. dissertation in 2007 while serving a church in Buffalo, New York. That same year he was invited to serve on the faculty at Kingswood University in Sussex, New Brunswick where he presently oversees pastoral ministries and church planting degree programs, and serves as the campus pastor. He is an avid hockey fan,  and also sings in a southern contemporary gospel music group called Emmaus Road. In addition to his most recent book By Signs and Wonders, he is presently writing 3 additional books entitled The Evolving Church:  What Changes In The Life Of a Church As It GrowsHomiletics for Students,  and Letters to a Young Pastor. He hopes to continue teaching the next generation of students at Kingswood, whom he describes as, “extremely eager to learn and respectful”.
